First Win for Lorenzo de Luca and De Flipper in the Prize Julius Baer CSI5*
01-06-2018

New partners Lorenzo de Luca of Italy and the 10-year-old KWPN gelding, De Flipper, demonstrated plenty of promise today in St. Tropez, earning their first win together in the Prize Julius Baer CSI5*.

Forty-nine riders attempted the challenging, first round track, with 10 returning to contest the jump-off round. Several of these, including de Luca, were debuting newer partnerships, but the competition left nothing to be desired.

De Luca stopped the clock at 33.93 seconds, though he was initially eclipsed by France’s Simon Delestre, who was disqualified when a spur rub was discovered after the class. That moved world #1 Harrie Smolders of the Netherlands & Zinius up to second place on a time of 34.29; Italy’s Alberto Zorzi & Ulane de Coquerie took third.

“This is the first jump-off in a big class for me and Flipper,” de Luca said. “He’s very careful and an amazing horse. He has a lot of confidence and he really wanted to do well for me today.”
